Summary: This dissertation examines the figutra of invalid as a symbol of the powerlessness of women in the United States during the turn of the century. In my opinion, this is an essential aspect for understanding the production of literary writer Virginia Ellen Glasgow (1873-1945). Although he wrote most of his novels during the first three decades of the twentieth century, was educated at Glasgow Victorian morality. Therefore, my analysis of disease and disability as a metaphor for the status of women has been carried out in the context of the cult of female invalidity of the time. The thesis focuses particularly on the image of the invalid as a manifestation of the ideals exaggerated male gender, defining femininity as a synonym for extreme weakness. The chapters of this thesis try to examine the figure of the void in some of the novels and short stories by Ellen Glasgow. In my view, this CHARGE operates as a mirror and reflects aspects of the personality of his players as well as the same author, and to some extent, women in general. While some of the female characters that are considered can not be classified as physically or medically disabled, my agumento is that Glasgow uses this cultural and aesthetic ideal as a metaphor to reveal the mechanisms of the male-dominated society in which he lived. The fiction Glasgow warns of the dangers assimilate these values, and that women of that time were educated to become a model of gentleness, innocence and selflessness, to the point of being reduced to invisibildad as individuals. Glasgow seems to suggest that this doctrine weakens women both physically and psychologically, because it condemns their needs and aspirations as invalid, ie no-válidas.

A general introduction addresses the cultural context of Arevalo, the figure of the editor and his literary production, and also the poet's work itself, providing a critical review of studies on it, in order to assess the contribution arevaliana. It provides a second chapter in the narrative of editing and issues covered in their run, which constitute real monograph on various aspects, emphasizing the study of manuscripts and editions addressed in the second and third chapters, and the method used in editing, treaty on the sixth and final chapter of his run. We conclude this section by linking the arevalianos with run-publishers upstream and downstream, constantado their potential liabilities and post their vengencia in publishers. Special mention must study the text offered by the publisher, the result of his meticulous collation of manuscripts and editions. The careful study of manuscripts consulted directly and the other of which by its indirect ways, reflect the interest of humanist towards be as reliable as possible. While the provision in this regard is well known, however devoid of scientific studies that show the strengths and weaknesses of work. The study conducted in this thesis has allowed to deduct the actual use and requires each source, follow-up on all of the manuscripts Vatican Reginense 333 and Ottoboniano 35, as well as their partial detachment of Roman, a recentior fifteenth century , who was at the Roman College. We have detected some errors humanist, small errata -lapsus calami-, reasonable in this kind of work. As for the indirect use of some manuscripts as Cantabrigenses, who was unable to read our humanist directly, it has tried to fill the job itself that the publisher would have wanted done. The manuscript Cantabrigense 304, the oldest and most valuable document to be kept at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, supports some of the thesis arevalianas, among other authority juvenciana's first questioned average that starts with the work. Despite the shortcomings attributable to the author and, above all, the time at which this issue was conducted, the rating for this edition-can confirmar- is highly positive. It was also analyzed using editions sy warns, for example, the reduced use of the edition and 1500 by Fausto due to the abundance of mistakes that the publisher found it, or the continued and timely matching editions as aldina, tornesiana or by Poelmann or Fabricio, to cite a few examples. With the result of our research is providing the text arevaliano a critical apparatus that is collected, purified, the information given in their variae lectiones by the publisher, as well as readings, if any, taken publishers modern Juvenco, Marold and Huemer. Then it addresses the study notes the comment by Arevalo, stressing that it Arevalo refers to passages from the work itself juvenciana (Story evangelical) abundant, varied and rich. It stresses the study of those in which the editor and commentator offers its most unique and original vision: one in which Arevalo refers to passages in the works already commented previously edited by 8 him au 8ea ers Christians as Prudencio and Draconcio. Very important is also the contribution made by other sources, such as evangelical, that the comentarias precisely the argument theme each ticket accompanied by excerpts neotestametnarias accurate, timely drawing of the previous editions. The most important findings of the study conducted confirm that the work Arevalo is the culmination of a humanistic tradition Scholars. It is therefore valuable starting point for rapprochement to the poet, as erudition and criticism in the eighteenth century meet in Árevalo, both in his Prolegomena as textual notes, issues metric sintáticas, content, performs, etc.. Arevalo represents a peak in tradition and is required as a place of reference for scholars subsequent Juvenco. The winning arevalianos in the setting of the text is reflected in the large show affinities with the text arevalino in their respective editions Marold and Huemer. His texts are shown mostly coincident with that offered by Arevalo. The scholarship in editing the humanist is abundant, both in the Prolegomena as varied commentary offered in his notes and, with few exceptions, their present is very impressive. It finally offers a complete bibliographic paragraph reflecting primarily works properly arevalianas, followed by ancient works cited by the editor, as well as studies juvenicanos and arevalianos, more recent works and other works of a general nature.
