Summary: The thesis deals with the growth, persistence and the existence of multiple equilibria of Spanish companies belonging to the manufacturing and service industries between 1994-2002. Specifically, the starting point is the comprovación of the Act Gibrat, ie the relationship between business growth and firm size for different sectors of the economy. The Act Gibrat determines that business growth is independent of size. That is, small and large companies have the same propensity to grow. Our results confirm the international empirical evidence that small businesses tend to grow more than large. From here, develops an analysis of the dependence between business growth at different times temporary. In other words, we ask if there is a positive or negative relationship between the past and the current developments in a company. Here, the data show a positive relationship between current and past growth. That is, companies that enjoyed positive growth, will grow more in the future. Another issue addressed is the existence of significant differences between the impact of the growth in size of companies belonging to the manufacturing regarding the effect on services. Our results show the existence of differences asignativas between the impact sized manufacturing and the services sector. Finally, this thesis examines the determinants of growth. Based on previous literature, we have incorporated cyclical variables, individual enterprise level, sectoral and regional efforts to observe more clearly what is the relationship of the various determinants of growth. Our results show the importance of the sector and the technological intensity of the same at the time to analyze the determinants of growth. Thus, the technology-intensive sectors have a greater tendency to grow than those who are among the manufactures.

Summary: The purpose of this Doctoral Thesis is studying the system and the housing policy in the Basque Country Autonomous Community. Given the growing social concern and the resulting institutional commitment that is generating the acute housing problems in our immediate surroundings, their analysis from a broad perspective and multidisciplinary is essential. This is contextualiza the housing problem of the Basque Country under the housing systems of the EU-15 and its most recent development in the era of neo-liberal globalization in which we live. The work is divided into four sections. The first deals with the housing market, which is both a theoretical and the other empirical analysis. The second paragraph incorporates the housing systems in Europe and examines the system of the CPV in that context. The third section focuses housing policy, integrating it into the evolution of welfare states (or rather, the welfare schemes), and deepening particularly in the materialization of housing policy in the Basque Country in the last decade. Finally, as a final point, the system is valued and housing policy from the perspective of sustainability. Thus, the most important reflections and conclusions of this work deal about the social, economic and environmental policies raised in the Basque Country and the future of its housing system.
