Summary: In search and rescue operations in the open sea (SAR) planning, strategy and procedure to be followed is a key to achieving the goal: To find the object of the search. The survival time of a person in the ocean is limited, and personal and material resources available to the SAR organizations also are limited. That is why in the specific case of searches of persons or small groups of people, procedures strategic pre-search itself become essential. In raise a search strategy, we are a large number of factors to take into account, often conflicting, and analyzed as a whole show and dimensionan the real magnitude of the problem. Within operations HRH Theory Search discipline is responsible for providing solutions and methods to find the purpose of optimizing search all available evidence. The Theory Search is a relatively new area of research. Not more than 10 years ago that the strategic recommendations recommended by the IMO (International Maritime Organization, through the code IMOSAR / MERSAR) on issues of operational procedures on the stage of work, were confined to little more than a proportional division of the area search according to the number of units available. This thesis goes somewhat beyond the current theories of the search, primarily from the issuance IAMSAR âManual International Services Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue, international text published by IMO, which is responsible for establishing the organization and planning the operations to be carried out by different agencies SAR. Based on a scientific approach, structured within a body matemático-estadístico, the thesis offers an alternative to the approach that today is being made. The main pillars technical underlying the method presented is based on the speed of the search units, the extent of visual serviolas and its relation to the separation between the different trajectories. In intuitively understand that greater speed means greater surface tracking, while at higher speeds the search quality decreases. On the other hand, higher density in the number of trajectories and higher quality in the search, but the time spent also increases dramatically. Based on the theoretical development of this structure, different from the hitherto employed, the working thesis also has eight field experiences (subsidized by the Ministry of Development) to complete a new approach within the discipline, leaving open several fronts in future studies might crystallize.
