Summary: This report examines the gradual introduction of the concepts in mathematics referential variable and function. This is addressed from a historical perspective the evolution of the idea of analysis since its inception until his final qualification as a mathematical analysis in the eighteenth century. We begin by analyzing the epistemological and ontological issues surrounding its beginnings in the use of the unknown and algebraic methods. Later considering the role of the Newtonian natural philosophy, in particular the idea of uniform flow, defined as untimely variable quantity. The incidence of mathematics is infinitesimal in relation to the description of the continuity characteristics of natural phenomena. At this point can be seen as the detection of regularities followed by the formulation of laws formal covariance of magnitude, as algebraic expression is outstanding finally in the early definitions of terms.
