Summary: This thesis focuses on the study of systems known by the abbreviation CBIR, whose main feature is to allow automatic extraction of features contained in a visual image such as its shape, color or texture. Thus, the user can look visually similar to one another without resorting to textual attributes that define. The degree of acceptance they have received systems CBIR since emerged at the beginning of the 90s, has been low except in very specific environments. However, according to studies, users are attracted by its search options, while the investigation into the matter is very extensive. This contradiction between the interest they generate retrieval techniques CBIR and their low overall approval leads to the need to inquire about the possible causes that motivate. This paper defines the systems CBIR and places its origin in time; discusses the productivity of research on the matter leaving patents which are the main lines open in the study of this issue as well as the lesser care; summarizes what are publications, professionals and institutions and working groups devoted most relevant increasing body of theory and practice around technology CBIRM, specifies the characteristics and limitations of this suffering major systems, and identifies the types we can classify applications CBIR existing commenting some examples within each category. We dedicate a section to the study of the applications directly related to our professional field have begun to be explored. Finally, it discusses in detail the problems of interaction that affect systems CBIR in its relationship with the user. The diagnosis offered confirms that the current system designs CBIR not have a high degree of adaptation to the characteristics of users, while the lack of homogeneity among them is a barrier added to the attempt to extend the use of these systems s any user community. To improve this situation propose minimum requirements for usability payable upon any system CBIR to ensure a design that can be learned and understood by all users.
