Summary: The investigation arose analyze the functions of guiding the public and private education, at the stage of Compulsory Secondary Education in the Autonomous Community of Aragon. The first part concerning the theoretical framework consists of three chapters. The first presents an evolution of the orientation throughout history, with emphasis on the development along the twentieth century in Spain and focusing more specifically on Aragon. The delimitation conceptual orientation is addressed in the second chapter analyzes summarizes the theoretical approaches of the guidance (educational, vocational, counseling or counseling, adjustment or focusing on problems, services and development). He emphasized the importance of targeting integrated in the educational process and its complementary role with respect to the diagnosis. It concludes with an overview of the most relevant definitions of guidance and a proposal. The third chapter, which closes the theoretical framework, builds on the complex and diverse classification of the functions carried out by counselors, justifying the functions employed in a questionnaire conducted ad hoc. The empirical study, arose in the fourth chapter stages of the investigation and presents the questionnaire used as a working tool. Later, in the fifth chapter discusses and evaluates the most significant results, according to personal data, on professional and the Center obtained from the population of counselors Aragon. Discusses the importance they attach to their counselors functions as well as their perceptions about the degree of cooperation and importance attached by the rest of the education community and the administration. It proposes a needs analysis to receive continuous training of human and material resources at its disposal to implement their duties, the average time spent, its integration into the life and activities of the Center, the extent to which fosters teamwork , the impact or effectiveness of their work, job satisfaction and the use of new technologies. It outlines what should be the role of prevention, the importance of the members of the Department of Guidance and the adequacy ratio counselor / student. The conclusions provide aspects relating to the theory, methodology as well as the perceptions of counselors about their roles in the ESO main objective of the study. This work has not been done before in Aragon and provides a descriptive and critical view of the situation of mentors in the Commonwealth, from the profound changes being experienced by the school at the beginning of the twenty-first century with the challenges it poses to the counselors considered agents of change but with a multitude of functions that are sometimes ambiguous and weak demarcation. It can be a useful research to reflect on the educational framework and propose changes affecting improvement from a systemic perspective throughout the educational community.
