Summary: In contemporary societies citizen insecurity increasingly part of the daily experiences of individuals. In Europe, victims are between 15% and 26% of the citizens. This thesis analyzes the security problems in seven European countries, Portugal, Catalonia (Spain), France, England (and Wales), Sweden, Switzerland and Poland. It aims to explain, from sociological and structural differences, the patterns of variation in the safety culture of the European countries. One learns victimization objective, subjective insecurity, attitudes and institutions to the demands of safety. It examines the level of public concern at the insecurity. We investigate social risk profiles. We identify the most vulnerable social groups and the factors involved. It characterizes the way in which people perceive the (in) security. They relate perceptions, attitudes and demands by social factors, cultural and demographic factors. The opinion poll and victimization International Crime Survey (ICVS) is the primary source of data. It employs cross comparative research to understand the different social realities. The results indicate that there are different patterns of crime associated with attitudes and behaviors that make up "culture of safety" in Europe. The similarities and differences between countries, make it possible to identify four models of cultures security: the Mediterranean, the eastern, Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian. They are distinguished by different socio-economic structures and cultural and individual characteristics. Differences also explains, in part, other than confidence, attitudes and demands toward the institutions linked to security. The European population demand more of life and understand security as an aspect of it. The sense of insecurity is a major problem in the continent. It grows with the uncertainty of modern life, brings intolerance and strengthens those who want more repression. The crime, insecurity, dsempleo, immigration, "unprotected" social inequality, among other issues, should not be seen as separate social problems, but as pieces of the puzzle that is very complex society today. It is necessary to include them within a broader framework of social policies that promote social cohesion and solidarity, and that, consequently, bring more security.
