An artist with diverse talents

Chaz Bono, as an artist, has turned out to be someone very versatile, since he has been an actor, writer and musician. His brief dalliance with music dates back to 1988, when he began playing with the group Ceremony. With them he launched the album “Cuelga tú” on the market in 1993.

The lyrics of the Ceremony songs were not only the work of Bono, as his bandmates Mark Hudson and Heidi Shink were also at his side. The particular style of their music made them take the style of the 60s and modernize it to transfer it to the 90s. Bono’s parents, Sonny and Cher, also collaborated on one of the group’s songs. However, the Ceremony group and its music did not arouse special passion among the public and critics.

As part of his writing, Chaz Bono worked for the LGBT magazine The Advocate, the longest-running gay magazine in the United States. He also published autobiographical books: The End of Innocence, Family Outing, and Transition: The Story of How I Came to Be a Man. In his work he reveals his feelings, his transition to becoming a man, his musical career and the loss of loved ones like his partner Joan.

In defense of the LGBT community

Although Chaz Bono did not publicly express his sexual orientation until 1995 in the gay magazine The Advocate, that was not the end for the versatile artist. In this way, Bono went on to become one of the great banners of the LGTB collective. Not only that, but his influence also led his mother, Cher, to be a fervent supporter of gay rights. In fact, Cher herself would end up on the cover of The Advocate magazine in 1996.

Although he confessed his sexual tendencies in 1995, it was in the interval between 2008 and 2010 when he carried out the transition from a woman to a man. Precisely in 2010, his transition led him to take the name Chaz and officially declare himself a man.

His father, Sonny, a conservative leaning and a California Republican congressman, didn’t take kindly to Chaz’s ideas. The deep ideological differences broke the relationship between the two until the death of Sonny Bono in 1998.
